kite spots in Sri Lanka

Hi guys, Sri Lanka is a wonderful country with a lot of biodiversity, culture, incredible landscapes and many kilometers of virgin beaches. In addition, for those who like to practice kitesurf there are many incredible spots to enjoy the practice of this sport!

Where is the main kite area in Sri Lanka?

Kalpitiya is a peninsula located in the northwest of Sri Lanka and is where the main kite spots of the country are located. This peninsula is more than 60 km long and the wind blows approximately 9 months a year. In the entire Kalpitiya peninsula we find wonderful spots for kiting: the kalpitiya lagoon (located about 5 km from the town of Kalpitiya), the Puttalam lagoon and the Kappaladi lagoon. Besides these three lagoons, there are several islands north of Kalpitiya, with an incredible wind and water dish: the Dream spot, the island of ilimppativu and the best known island of all: Vella Island

What’s so special about these kite spots?

Of course the wind statistics is the main reason why people come to Sri Lanka to practice kiting. However, there are many other reasons why people get hooked on these spots and it is because they still have an authenticity that is very difficult to find in other kite spots. The Kalpitiya lagoon is the spot that is most developed, however, the rest of the spots are still quite virgin and we cannot find anything else besides nature and wildlife. This would be another reason why everyone who comes to kite to these spots falls in love with them

In addition to the Kalpitiya Peninsula, wind statistics on the Mannar peninsula (located north of Kalpitiya) are also very good and there are many km of flat water where you can ride and enjoy Kite to the fullest.

There are some months of the years in which we can perform kitesurfing in other spots in Sri Lanka, such as in Matara or Weligama, located in the south. In summer, the wind blows very strongly and you can kite in the sea, reaching even 30 knots, however in these southern spots there is no infrastructure that helps kitesurfers to get into the water. The same happens in Arugambay, very well known as a surfing spot, where sometimes good wind, but the direction of the wind and the characteristics of the place makes a complicated spot for the practice of kitesurfing.

It is very important that before deciding the spot that you want to travel to, you should take into account the wind seasons (winter and summer). In Kalpitiya and in Mannar it is windy almost all year round, however in winter season, the direction of the wind changes so the conditions for kitesurfing also do so.

The main kitesurfing schools are located in Kalpitiya. Probably one of the best kite school is Margarita kite school, located only 5 minutes from Kalpitiya lagoon. if you are thinking about coming to kite to Sri Lanka, the best kite spots are found in the Kalpitiya peninsula and in the peninsula of Mannar
